Homemade Sweet Onion Poppyseed Dressing

If there’s one thing that can take a salad from "just fine" to "can’t-put-my-fork-down good," it’s the dressing. And let me tell you, this homemade sweet onion poppyseed dressing does exactly that. Made with real ingredients—no mystery oils or preservatives—this dressing brings just the right balance of sweet, tangy, and creamy, perfect for drizzling over a bed of fresh greens, juicy berries, toasted almonds, and crumbles of goat or feta cheese.

Why Make Your Own Dressing?

Store-bought dressings might be convenient, but they often come with a long list of ingredients you can’t pronounce. This dressing, on the other hand, is made with simple, wholesome ingredients that let the flavors shine. No seed oils, no artificial sweeteners—just good, honest flavor that makes every bite better. Plus, it comes together in just a few minutes!

The Perfect Pairing

This sweet onion poppyseed dressing is especially good on spring and summer salads. I love tossing it with fresh spinach or mixed greens, sliced strawberries, blueberries, crunchy toasted almonds, and a generous sprinkle of goat or feta cheese. Pairs fabulously with proteins as well: Shrimp, Salmon, Chicken, Steak. Any and all of the above!

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 1/2 cup of white wine vinegar

  • 2 tablespoons of chopped red onion

  • 1 teaspon ground mustard

  • 1 teaspoon sea salt

  • 1 cup avocado or olive oil

  • 1 tablespoon Poppyseeds ***do not blend poppy seeds. Stir into dressing after blended.

How to Make It:

  1. In a blender or food processor, combine sugar, white wine vinegar, chopped red onion, ground mustard, oil and salt. Blend until smooth.

  2. Stir in the poppyseeds and transfer to a jar or any sealable glass container.

  3. Let it chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes—trust me, it gets even better with time!

Pro Tip:

If you’ve never made homemade dressing before, you’ll be amazed at how much better it tastes after resting in the fridge. Letting the flavors meld together makes all the difference!
